Cyanotype History:
The Cyanotype is one of the first photographic processes, discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1842. The process has been used by countless artists and scientists since it invention. One of the first to use it was Anna Atkins who created a book on British Algae, now considered one of the first photo-books ever and by the first female photographic artist.
This chemical and handmade process uses Ultra-Violet light to imprint an image onto paper. The rich blue tone of the image is the result of the cyanotypes light sensitive photographic chemical reaction. The solution is strikingly applied to the paper by hand and a photographic negative is placed on top of the page. After exposure and development in water, the print becomes permanent and the image is reveled. Each print has unique brushstrokes as a result.
Our Cyanotypes are handmade in New York using archival French 100% Cotton Printmaking paper, which is acid free and pH neutral.
Though our Cyanotypes are in an edition, each are unique therefore the print shown is the only one available.
